Presented by Joann Lugt (021) 531 5422 or 084 879 8511
What is baby sign language? Baby sign language can be defined as a means of widening your baby’s ability to communicate by teaching baby intentional non-verbal gestures and sounds before she can use speech.
What are the benefits of teaching your baby sign language? Infancy is a time for reveling in the wonders of the world, discovering how things work, sharing the joys and fears of each day. Children are motivated to learn to communicate because they desperately want to socialize and join in. Parents often stop at the basic signs like “bye-bye”, “yes” and “no” and never make the most of their infant’s signing potential.
Signs lead to better communication. If the baby does not have signs to use, she has to resort to pointing, crying, moaning, saying “uh uh” Signs speed up the process of learning to talk. Signs stimulate intellectual development. Signs enhance self-esteem. Signs strengthen the parent-infant bond. Signs reduce parent and infant frustration. Baby signing is fun!
At what age could I teach my baby sign language? Baby sign language is useful from 9 – 36 months. One can start at any time during this window before your child starts talking.
